Feeling Stressed… Just Keep Swimming
I am all about the feels and there is nothing like the feeling of jumping into the sea. From an icy morning, wild winters day or under the full moon it can literally take your breath away. The Danielle that comes out is always different to the one that went in.
For as long as I can remember my connection with the water has run deep. Growing up in Ballyvaughan, the sea was at our doorstep; summers were spent swimming off Monks pier, Fanore or Bishops Quarters beach. In my early 20’s I took up surfing – still very much a beginner that is besides the point. The first time I truly understood what it was to be present or in the moment was when I was in the water.
During the Pandemic for many the sea was an escape and a way to press reset, I for certain was one! During the first two lockdowns I became more familiar with swimming spots on the East Coast…Velvet Strand in Portmarnock, Clontarf, the 40ft, Seapoint & the Vico Baths.
With lockdown number 3 I decided to stay at home in Clare, where the sea is literally our backyard. This is the first time where I have swum throughout the year and it really has been glorious! The last 5 months have been particularly challenging on most and having the sea as a way to help with my mental health is something I am extremely grateful for.
It is heart-warming to see so many people taking the plunge into the sea and keeping it up. It has been a fantastic way to connect with people and little swim tribes are popping everywhere.
Swimming has many benefits:
1. Reduces Stress
2. Social Connection
3. Boosts Your Immune System
4. Improves Circulation
5. Burns Calories
One of my goals in 2021 was to get a group of women to go for more night-time swims particularly to celebrate both the Full & New Moons each month. Now that restrictions are being lifted this is becoming more of a possibility. If you would like to join me, please do reach out. Let us just keep swimming, just keep swimming!
